pilates socks for beginners: the five things nobody tells you

five things, one class each to learn them the hard way. or read this.

1. the studio sells a pair, and it's fine, and it's $15–20

most reformer studios require grip socks and keep a house pair at the desk for people who forgot. it works. it's also a plain sock at full price. bring your own and that money goes toward the pair you actually like.

2. dots are not the same as grip

turn the sock over. if the grip is a scatter of dots, it grips where the dots are, and your heel on the footbar is often not where the dots are. a full-coverage sole grips wherever your foot lands. on a moving carriage that's the difference between planting and re-planting.

3. between sizes, size up

a cuff that holds keeps a slightly long sock in place; a slightly short sock creeps at the heel. gimme's chart is S/M for US 5–8 and L/XL for 8.5–12. the sizing page has the two tells for a wrong size.

4. the dryer is the enemy

heat ages the grip faster than any class does. machine wash cold, air dry, no softener. they're dry before tomorrow's booking.

5. buy three, not one

one pair means laundry every class night. three pairs is one per class day between washes, and packs are where the per-pair price drops: $19 a pair in the set, shipped free, with a scrunchie for the headrest problem you'll discover in class two.

what grip socks should a beginner buy?

closed toe, full-coverage grip sole, the right size, and a colorway you'll reach for. that's the whole spec.

can i do pilates without grip socks?

on a mat, often yes. on a reformer, most studios say no. what studios actually require.
